My Top 5 Interview Tips
If you’re not in a position to create a life story film with us right now, don’t let that stop you recording the precious stories of your loved ones. Having worked as a TV Producer and Director for 20 years, and after interviewing hundreds, if not thousands of people from all walks of life, below are my Top 5 Interview tips to help you interview your loved one on your phone!
Find a quiet, well-lit space with something of visual interest in the background… not just a white wall. Make sure your phone is in the landscape orientation, securely in position (resting against something is fine) and check the framing includes the head, chest and arms.
Create a relaxed atmosphere and expect the first few minutes to be awkward, so ask warm-up questions to start.
Ask open-ended questions which start with “Describe” or “Tell me about…”
If answers become too long or off topic, try and get an alternative answer which is more succinct.
Ask the big questions that matter most. Ask for life advice, the secrets to happiness or wisdom to pass on to the next generation.
