Behind-the-Scenes on one of our life story films
Wondering what to expect if you were to create one of our life legacy films? Let’s take a look behind-the-scenes!
Firstly, if you’re imagining a big television crew bustling in on filming day, think again. It’s just me. My name is Danika Armytage. I’ve worked in television as a producer and director for 20 years now and this company is my (other) much-loved baby. I direct, I shoot, I cut and as of today… I write blogs!
So, come filming day, you can expect to see my smiling face, a cinema-quality camera, a few lights and some microphones which all fit neatly into a camping trolley - so the gear won’t take up your whole house.
The first hour or so is for setting up the interview, but it’s also a great chance to better get to know each other, chat through the plan for the day and settle any nerves (which are pretty much inevitable for most people but they generally subside once we get going).
Then onto my favourite part, the interview. I love interviewing because I love getting to know what is important to people, what makes them tick, what memories they cherish and what stirs their heart even decades on. I’ve interviewed all walks of life during my TV career, from celebrities, to sportsmen, from refugees to renovators, and I think my strength is creating a relaxed atmosphere and helping ‘the talent’ tell their story in a way that makes them feel confident. Together, we get to the core of what they want to say, in a way that only they can.
Finally, we film extra ‘B-roll footage’ around the home and local area – pictures which support the story told in the life story interview. This includes footage of the star of the show doing everyday activities around the house, spending time with loved ones, and details around the home itself like framed photos on the mantelpiece. This extra footage is what allows us in post-production to elevate the interview into a beautiful, premium-quality documentary film.
Once you have selected your archival photos to accompany the film (we guide you through that process too), leave the rest to us. You’ll be watching your life story within a month.
I hope that helps you imagine what it’s like behind-the-scenes creating our films. Our films are the ultimate gift between loved ones, between generations and an incredible way to preserve family history.
